Want the taste of classic s’mores without building a campfire? These s’mores graham krispie treats , aka Indoor S’mores, come together in a flash with just a couple of ingredients!
Updated Post – June 2023

Are you going camping for the 4th of July? Oh lucky you!
With it being right in the middle of the week (seriously?!), I’m not entirely sure I’ll be able to steal away for an extended weekend of campfires, pine trees and ticks on the dog to get in an over abundant number of s’mores and beers. Dang!!
So in lieu of that – I wanted to make an at-home version that would satisfy my whim for s’mores without fretting over flaming marshmallows, unruly campfire cinders, sticking said flaming marshmallow into my own hair as I wave it frantically around trying to extinguish the flames. It’s happened. Don’t judge.
Blowing on the marshmallow just won’t do. And if the recent Canadian wildfires are any indication on whether or not we will be able to have our own campfires this summer, the odds are NOT in our favor. So indoor s’mores will have to do.

*This post is a re-write from the original back in 2011 before Ben and I got married!! Some items have been updated and shortened.*
Truth be told these satisfied two whims – my need for s’mores and the need to eat my feelings and stress over my wedding that is officially 60 days away. *cue panic*
This weekend whilst Ben was home from the Palouse for all of one whole day, we had several victories on the wedding front and I then had a near panic attack after having to as politiely-as-possible explain to a family member that they would not be invited to the wedding because – weddings are expeeeensseeevvveee and our guest list is nearly double of what we originally even wanted!
I was a deer in the headlights.
*HeadDesk*
It didn’t go well. I nearly cried.
However, for the weekend victories – we managed to secure our rings!

After several trips to stores and retailers Ben was finally able to settle on a ring that isn’t quite “the one” since the one that he had his heart set one doesn’t exist. Somehow it is impossible to find a satin polished plain tungsten band – A.N.Y.W.H.E.R.E. Sure they come in titanium that scuffs and must be re-brushed every six months, but not one can be found in tungsten. This future “M-urse” needs sturdy, durable and resilient ring that isn’t trendy. Imagine that! Have you met Ben? Not trendy. And I love that.
And – we also booked our HONEYMOON!!
Sorry, I won’t be divulging our honeymoon destination. You’ll all find out in August. (Don’t worry I’m not leaving you out – we’re only telling our parents and my MOH where we’re going – trying to keep one thing of this wedding purely to ourselves. And it’s proving fun to fluster the old folks who are just too nosey.)

But, I will tell you about it is that we booked it through Costco! *insert shameless Costco plug* Gawd, I love Costco having even, yes – bought my wedding dress there. Their travel department was overwhelmingly helpful and we secured two extra discounts that we wouldn’t have been able to get if we hadn’t have called them and had someone personally check for those extra little hidden discounts for us. SCORE! I will say right now – that I will book with them again.
Since the biggest fail of the weekend was telling my family member that they wouldn’t be able to attend our wedding and get the subsequent cold shoulder (we will be having a reception after we get back from the honeymoon for those who couldn’t attend!) I still feel like this was a pretty darn successful – yes stressful – weekend.

So maybe these S’mores Graham Krispie Treats are equal parts Victory and Eat-My-Feelings treats. Either way, I’ll take it.
For these tasty mock-camping treats I substituted the traditional rice krispies with my all-time favorite childhood cereal – Golden Grahams. How can you not love these? And added in was an inordinate amount of chocolate chips to give them the melty chocolate effect we love so much when toasted marshmallows make out with Hershey bars and melt together in sinful bliss. I just can’t turn down a s’mores graham krispie treat, and my family makes these all the time! My SIL even said they made these s’mores graham krispie treats for her boyfriend’s family! So they are making their rounds!

Ingredients
- 1 bag (10 oz) Mini Marshmallows
- 6 Tbsp Butter
- 1 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate chips + 1/4-1/2 cup extra for topping
- 1 box (12 0z) Golden Grahams Cereal
- 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
- Pinch of Salt, optional

I’ve been loving marshmallow treats lately! 🙂
And wedding stress? I feel you. 18 days for me! EEEEK!
Sorry it was painful to say no but yes, the weddings are so incredibly expensive. I am sure they will understand! Looks like your wedding plans are coming together beautifully! And August is not too far away! 🙂 Wonderful treat idea! Hugs to you, Sweet Megan!
These look so delicious I can’t wait to try them. One of my favourite parts of summer are the s’mores…but these may be suitable for a rainy day 😉
I bought my husband’s wedding band online :O I know…can you believe it?! He also wanted a tungsten band, which I was not able to find ANYWHERE. I ended up buying it on tungstenaffinity.com I was a little skeptical, but the ring is awesome and they had amazing customer service when I tried to call them. You may want to check it out.
So happy to hear that you have secured a honeymoon. All this wedding stress will be over soon and you’ll be able to enjoy *insert destination here* to the fullest!
I love that you’re not even telling your family and wedding party where you’re going for your honeymoon!! SO exciting. 🙂 Have him keep looking… I think hubs wish he’d gotten tungsten but got something else and it was scratched up like crazy before we even left our honeymoon!! ps I totally want graham cereal now
Fun! Makes me miss wedding planning and NOT miss the drama of it all! They’ll get over it though.
These next 60 days are going to fly by for you! All the flavors of s’mores all mixed up in one tasty graham krispie treat, love it!
oooo these look sticky and just plain awesome!!!
These would be the perfect campfire treat! Lovely!
I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like to plan a wedding, I’m just glad that you had some of these treats on hand to help with all that stress!
Ulysses would die if I made these. He’s obsessed with rice krispie treats but I never make them b/c the marshmallow mess just doesn’t seem worth it for puffed rice. In Smores form however…I might have to cave.
Can’t wait to hear where you guys are going! I wish I could re-do a wedding again just for the honeymoon. Best vacation ever!
This looks like such a great treat!! 🙂
Oh I made something like this about a year ago but I ended up baking them because they were a little on the runny side. They were with golden grahams (love them!) These look fabulous!
So many fun krispie treat recipes floating around. Hope the stress subsides soon. Enjoy the rest of the plannign!
These are awesome!! Love the Golden Grahams in there!!
Good luck with the wedding plans. Sometimes you have to step back and remember why you are getting married and who it is for. Can be tough!!
What?! You can get wedding dresses at Costco too?! Costco is so awesome!
And these treats! Oh my gosh, soo good!!
I did get my wedding dress at Costco!! It’s Kristie Kelly, and it’s beautiful. The price was 1/2 of her retail prices, too! How could I pass it up! 🙂 You can search for the Kristie Kelly Signature collection and that’s the line that Costco sells.
These look so mouthwatering, Megan! What a great summer treat! Wishing you lots of success with the wedding planning. Hope it’s been smooth sailing for you since that rough incident!
Okay, I have to make a trip to Costco. I’ve never set foot in one, so I had no idea that not only do they have a whole travel department, but wedding dresses too! I must check this madness out. And now I want some s’mores like nobody’s business.
I’m not leaving town so I will most definitely make these! And Costco is amazing! I didn’t know they had wedding dresses there. I’ll definitely buy my future wedding dress from there 🙂
I LOVED these as a little kid and you have inspired me to make them again!! omggg these were so addicting. costco is so amazing for travel deals..i was looking the other day but it’s too far out to book anything. i wish you could just whisper to me where you’re going 😉
These look delicious. Such a good recipe for the Fourth.
xo E + J
*maybe* we might get a Costco in Brisbane next year or the year after. I cannot wait! There’s one in Melbourne and Sydney and Canberra.. surely they won’t leave us stranded. For this yank who also loves Costco, I can’t wait.
I didn’t know they sold wedding dresses though! I’ve been away far too long!
I have been known to toast a marshmallow over a candle just to set it on fire. I like ’em that way. 🙂
HEA-VEN.
Shut.the.front.door! Good heavens this looks AH-mazing!
I AM A SUCKER FOR SMOREESSSSS
these look quite extraordinary – SOOOOOOOOOO good –

My husband and I found our tungsten bands at overstock.com
Sometimes I just want a s’more without the fuss of smelling like campfire smoke. This is the absolute best alternative. I love it! And I hope the next 60 days go quickly, but without stress for you 🙂
Did you find the satin finish tungsten band? http://Www.fabledesigns.net has them, we sell them at the store where I work. You can pick what finish you want on any band and completely customize them. They. Are. Awesome. Online doesn’t have a complete catalog last time I checked, but I know they are doing some updates.

So this absolutely made my day. Not only is it a recipe for one of my favorite treats ever. But I found this recipe as I was sitting at my desk at work, working at Costco Travel. Waiting for a call, to be able to book someone fabulous vacation or Honeymoon. 🙂 I can’t wait to pass this on to my managers. Thank you for making my day yesterday.
I don’t understand your priorities. Weddings are SO expensive that you can’t invite some relative who cared enough about you that she wanted / expected to attend? Cut out the useless material stuff that can’t show love or interest in you, and invite more PEOPLE. Weddings should be a celebration of families coming together, not a red-carpet event that has to be a perfect party. What will be important to you 20 or 30 years from now? Flowers and food, or an aunt/ cousin/ whatever that would have held your hand during some bad times to come? And I can’t believe the other comments… “they’ll get other it”— geez no one ‘gets over’ being snubbed and hurt like that. Family is more important than flowers, fashion, food etc.. What is really important?

I just love these! And s’mores always make everything better!
Mine didn’t turn out so pretty (chocolate melted) but they were DELICIOUS!! My store didn’t have mini choc chips or marshmellows so I used regular size and just added in some more Golden Grahams. (used cinnamon too) Thanks for the recipe…loved it!
No doubt. Let your guest list determine your venue and frills, based upon your budget, not the other way around. Seriously poor choice.
Ok if you make these, you need to double the marshmallows! An 8 oz. bag is not nearly enough for an entire box of cereal. The second time I made them turned out way better than the first when I used extra marshmallow. They are very delicious! Everyone who tried them loved them!
I made these and the were sooo good! Addictive!!!
I just wanted to share my experience with these. When I saw the pan size I was VERY confused, I’ve never used a 9×9 for any type of crispy treats, so I went ahead and used my 13×9 like usual. They turned out great, still thick and wonderful AND that size yield more squares/bars. Also, mine didn’t look quite like the picture because the chocolate chips melt quite a bit when you mix them in, maybe my marshmallow mixture got hotter or something. Next time I will heat it slower and I will probably use half the amount of chocolate chips and press the 1/4 cup on top.
Thank you for posting your comment; it was the one I was looking for! I wanted to know if anyone else had used the 9×13!
Devour these, we did!!!! These are amazing!!!!! I had to share them on my blog today, thank you for sharing your talents!

I loved this! My chips melted, but I didn’t mind that much…chocolate marshmallows are delicious. Its a really tasty alternative to traditional rice krispy treats 🙂
These were great! So easy and delicious! I wrote about them here: http://plainjanemadlibby.blogspot.com/2012/07/pinterest-project-smore-graham-treats.html
I am following your blog… hope we can share more great ideas and recipes!
i just made these and they are AMAZING!!!!! and so quick and easy
just one question how long does it take for them to get hard? ive tried cutting them into bars but they are falling apart?
Omg-these r so yummy! The chocolate chips melted so I might add them just as a topper next time (although I like the chocolate mess they don’t look as pretty as in the pix).
Oh man…these look incredible! 🙂
Thanks for sharing this recipe! I’ve already made them two times since Sunday. They are SO yummy! My family LOVES them!
Twice since Sunday? That must mean they’re good! I’m thrilled you and the family like them so much. I’ve been having a craving for them too. haha
I’m not sure what color ring your fiance was looking for, but mine had a tungsten carbide ring during his first marriage (he’s actually trying to sell it now! haha) and it is like a dark silver-pewter color. Tungsten carbide never dents, scratches, bends, or anything and never has to be polished .. Is this the type of thing he was looking for? Bc they do exist 🙂
P.S. recipe looks delicious — going to try it!!! Thanks!
We ended up finding him a tungsten ring. It’s not “The one” he wanted, which apparently they don’t make a plain satin finished band without any ridges or polished sides, weird. But it’ll look fantastic on him.
Hi, I found this post from Pinterest, and this recipe sounds amazing so I can’t wait to try it! Looking at dates and numbers it looks like your wedding is really soon, so congrats! Enjoy your wonderful just-for-you honeymoon. 🙂 Don’t listen to people who are saying to do things differently with your wedding. It’s funny, everyone says “It’s your day!” but then everyone has opinions they want to share. I hope your wedding is beautiful and all you ever dreamed of, mine was (just six months ago :D)! Btw, I’m a nurse so I think it’s great your husband has a tungsten ring; my husband has one and I think they’re great, they’ll put up with a lot of abuse, thankfully!
I make these all the time. They are so yummy!
An inspired idea and a breeze to make.
I bow to you.
I wanted a few visible marshmallows to complement the visible chocolate chips, so i reserved one handful to throw in with the cereal stir-in.
Two batches fresh from the ‘fridge in Midtown Manhattan; one’s headed North to one college kid, one headed South to the other.
Part of their Study Break care packages, I doubt either will make it out of the mailroom before they’re mostly gone…
Made these today and they were yummy! Next time around, I will use more marshmallows and less cereal as the cereal seemed to overpower the taste somewhat. Having said that, it was still a great, easy recipe. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Megan, I was hoping you’d let us put these droolworthy treats in an e-book we’re doing to raise money for No Kid Hungry this month. You’d get full credit and a copy of the ebook when it was done, let me know soon please. Thanks!

My son went to a camping birthday party last night and came home with a trail mix that contained golden grahams, pretzels, chocolate chips and marshmallows. I didn’t try it until today and then I told my husband that I really want to make some kind of sticky treat with all of those ingredients (except pretzels because I don’t love them). I opened up Pinterest and this is one of the first things that shows up on my page! I am so excited about these and cannot wait to make them!
I made these today for my grandparents. My grandma suggested that when you mix in the chocolate chips, to also add a cup of the marshmallows. They will get a bit soft but not melt. We all loved these so much!
i made these and they are delicious however dont really look like the picture. the marshmellow goes clear when you heat it and fold the ghrams and in the picture its distinctly white.. i didnt read the comments before making these, and the last one with adding a cup of marshmellows with the chocolate chips would probably have made them more white, also the chocolate chip all melted pretty fast for me.
Sorry they didn’t turn out as you expected Brenda. I hope they were delicious all the same. I’m wondering if the brand of marshamllow might have played a roll in the white vs clear marshmallow battle? And you used a whole bag of mini-mallows? Hmmm, that’s weird. I mixed in some of the chocolate chips later so they didn’t melt as quickly, and don’t forget to add them to the top of the bars as well. 🙂

Do I use a cupcake pan ?
You can use a cupcake pan for individual sized treats – but I used a 13×9 and cut them up afterwards.
Ack…my chocolate chips started to melt as I was stirring, but I felt like if I didn’t get them in there they wouldn’t stick. What to do? 🙂
What if you don’t have vanilla extract?
Then you can omit it from the recipe. It just adds a nice hint of vanilla but it doesn’t ruin the recipe if its not in there. It’s tasty either way.
These are so delicious. I also got the recipe off Pinterest. The only thing that I change, is that I use MILK CHOCOLATE chocolate chips. I prefer this as an authentic s’more is made with a Hershey bar! 🙂 yummy! Thanks for the idea!!!

Found these on pinterest can’t wait to try them. Also my fave childhood cereal. My quick fix is throw a handful or two of cereal over vanilla ice cream, drizzle with chocolate syrup and add marshmallows or whipped cream. Cereal stays crispy even as ice cream melts. Yummm
Alright, usually I read these comments that people leave to see if I need to tweak a recipe…but this time I feel the need to comment…
Ladies, do not judge this girl on whom she sees fit to invite to HER wedding. Yes, I understand that may mean leaving out family members. But let’s be honest, maybe het family isn’t like your family. You don’t know. So stop judging her. And yes, they will get over it. As you’ve stated, they are family. That’s what family does…we get over it when we hurt eachothers feelings and get on with it. Someone else will do something soon and you can all be mad at them instead. It’s your wedding. Invite who you want.
Alas, now I’m going to go make a huge tray of these and try not to eat them all before my husband finds them. Seeing as I’m 9 monthes pregnant and due in a week…this could be challenging. Thanks for the recipe!
My oldest daughter got married this past September. We had a very laid back event, and it was still stressful! ;o) Worth it, but stressful.
Now I am off to make these treats for my youngest daughter. They’ll be under the tree on Christmas morning, and she will be thrilled. Thanks!
I didn’t use a pan at all! I bought some of the sturdier foil mini muffin cups and just grabbed chunks and pressed them into the cups. It worked out great, and I added them to a big platter of Christmas cookies.
Next time, I think I’ll try milk chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet… with s’mores, you use Hershey bars so the milk chocolate chips will be more authentic and tasty. As others mentioned, the chocolate melts, so they don’t look anything like the photo. I considered using mini M&Ms but those would probably melt as well. Maybe next time I’ll wait until they’re cooled down before adding the chocolate chips.
Just got done making these yes the chocolate chips melt even if you let it cool a bit. But when I put them in the pan I put them in the fridge for about 5 minutes and then added the chips to the top. I did make an addition I took a small container of marshmellow fluff and put it in a microwave safe dish and melted it then put it in a ziplock bag cut off a corner and zig zagged it on them and OMG do they look amazing! Thanks 🙂
Would it be possible to do the melting portion in a microwave? Has anyone tried that? I want to make these with my students, but don’t have access to a stove.
I have not tried melting them in a microwave. I would try it on 50% power and make sure you melt it with butter at the same time… But just be careful. Let me know how it all works out! Good luck 🙂

These turned out great and I know my coworkers will love them tomorrow. For everyone with melted chocolate issues – I always keep my chocolate chips in the freezer so they stayed in tact when I added them to the mixture. Megan, I hope your wedding was everything you wanted it to be – my husband and I eloped in a hot air balloon because so many friends and family members had opinions on how we should do things. It was perfect and everyone came to the reception a month later and no one had a problem with our decision. I hope you’re enjoying your first year of marriage – congratulations and thank you for the recipe.
Wendy, Thank you so very much! I’m thrilled that these S’mores bars turned out for you. And I love the chocolate chips in the freezer trick!!
Our wedding was perfect in every possible way. It was 104 degrees out, but if that was the worst part of the day, I’m okay with that! All is well on the newlywed front and I am blissfully happy with my new little family. 🙂 Thanks so much. XOXO

This may be a silly question, but how exactly do you cut these? I’d like to get a nice sharp edge like you show in your picture.
And congratulations on your wedding! I’ll be having my own in a few months. 🙂

These look delicious! Here’s a question for you – I’ve made the s’mores krispy treats before, and my issue was that the melted marshmallows were so hot they melted all the chocolate chips. It was still tasty, but it just didn’t look anywhere near as cute as yours. Did you wait for the marshmallows to cool a little bit? And if so, did they stick to the bowl?

Thank you for this amazing recipe! I just tried these and I’m not sure why, but mine turned out rock hard! I followed all the ingredients you listed but had just a small handful short of a full bag of marshmallows. I seriously would have broken my tooth trying to bite into them let alone cut them into squares.
Lucky for me, the hubby suggested breaking them up with a knife into small chunks and eating them that way, which was still amazing! But would love to know what I did to make them so hard! I’m totally uncomfortable in the kitchen so the food probably sensed that and decided to trick me up 🙂 Thanks for sharing and congrats on the wedding!!!

Tried making these last night and unfortunately they were not as good as I thought. They were very tasty but kind of hard to eat. They were messy and very chocolatey. I think it would’ve worked a little better if there was more marshmallow or less golden grahams. Overall they were very good and I think I might bring them to a party tonight but not quite sure if I’ll be making them again. If I do I know I’ll be tweaking it in some way. Thanks for the recipe!!

Just got done making these bars! They are cooling in the fridge and I haven’t tried them yet. I froze my chocolate chips like another person suggested and it helped the chips not melt but some still melted which is okay because it was a nice swirly pattern! I also added in about 1/4th a cup of butterscotch caramel ice cream topping I had left over in the fridge after stirring in the cereal. I know it’s not really a traditional s’more but I loooove caramel on anything! I think that something that would help the chips not melt is to transfer the marshmallow mixture with the cereal stirred in, into a different bowl and then mixing the frozen chips in. I noticed a lot of my chips melted on the sides of the pan and the bottom where it was most hot. Thank you so much for the recipe! I’m going to go try them now 🙂
Update: just tried these and they are sticky messy and chocolatey and ohh soo good!! They have only cooled for 10 minutes in the fridge so they aren’t ready to be cut into bars yet. I am not sure if it will harden up all the way to make clean cuts but that’s okay because my husband and I will probably eat it with a spoon out of the pan!!! This is a very rich treat (especially with the addition I made) so it’s best with a Big glass of cold milk!!
I’d like to know how yours came out with visible marshmallow and non melted chocolate chips. Mine does not look like that at all and I followed the recipe exactly! They are still VERY good, but the picture is very deceiving.
Hi Heather – I mixed in the marshmallow first and just at the last minute added in the chocolate. The marshmallow had cooled slightly so the chocolate didn’t melt as much. Feel free to press in more chocolate chips into the top after it cools to give it a speckled effect. Glad they still tasted good!
My chocolate melted. I feel mislead by the pic but they are still good. Thnx 4 the recipe.

Just made this, bringing it down for sunday dinner dessert at my aunts, couldnt stop eating it as i was making it! cant wait for everyone to try it, just know it will be a hit!
I made these and it wasn’t pretty. Mine were a hot mess. When I mixed in the chocolate chips they all melted in and didn’t look beautiful like yours pictured. What I can say is that they tasted amazing and they are already gone!! I will definitely make these again and again, we loved them! Hopefully they won’t be so ugly next time. :0)
One suggestion for the recipe…. don’t add chocolate chips until the mix is served in the pan. They totally melted on me and there is no sign of the marshmallow goodness. It’s now just chocolate and grahms. 🙁

I made this recipe today, but I wouldn’t agree with the proportions. First of all, definitely don’t use a medium pan. Use an extra large one. By the time you pour in a whole box of cereal, there is no room to stir it all together without cereal pieces falling out onto your burner. I had to switch to a larger pan, and even then I was thinking that a bigger one would be better.
Also, I would use at lease half a bag more of marshmallows. After switching to the bigger pan, it was evident that I wouldn’t have enough melted marshmallow to coat all of the cereal. Thankfully for me I had another bag in the cabinet.
Once I added the chocolate chips I really wished I used an even bigger pan. Again, there was not enough room to really mix it all up. I know I’ll have bars with barely any chips.
Also, I’m not so sure a 9×9 pan is right either. I haven’t cut mine yet, so we’ll see. But I’m imaging that they’re going to be really thick. A 13×9 probably would be better, so that they can spread out more and not be quite so thick. We’ll see.
Hopefully they really do taste amazing, as this recipe is a bit deceiving…

Yours turned out waaaay differently. All the chocolate melted. Recipe calls for 9×9 pan but they are so thick I don’t know how to eat them. Maybe a knife and fork. I didn’t use all the cereal, either as there wasn’t enough marshmallow. I haven’t ever made marshmallow treats so the recipe confused me. I wasn’t sure when to turn the heat off as the recipe doesn’t say, so I probably cooked it too long on top of it. Looks like a Pinterest fail. I threw away my spoon after I gave up cleaning it. Lol…
Thanks katy, I’ll go and take another look at the recipe to see where improvements can be made. And I’ll make sure you I make a note to use a 13×9 pan to make them thinner.
Mine turned out great!! I’m addicted! I will never look at golden grahams as a cereal to eat ever again.
For fun with mine I use HUGE sized chocolate chips and add them quickly before I put it into the cooling pan. Then I add chunks of cut up Ghirardelli bar to add some more chocolate chunkiness to it. Mine still comes out white like a crispy treat so I don’t add marshmellows at the end, but I have and it is SO good!
What type of vanilla extract do you use? It’s so thick!
Hi Kristen!! I use Nielsen-Massey vanilla bean paste for most of my recipes!

Quick question. Why use the cereal instead of graham crackers?
You can definitely try graham crackers, but they tend to go stale so quickly, using the cereal keeps them crunchier for longer.
