Make this ultra creamy Homemade Nutella Hot Cocoa boozy for the adults, or kid-friendly! With two kinds of chocolate!

Three years ago I wrote my first cookbook, Cast Iron Gourmet. And through the process of writing it, I had to make painful decisions to cut some of my favorite recipes out to keep the book within the page and recipe limits from my publisher. Sadly, this Homemade Nutella Hot Cocoa was one of them! But, it is finally getting it’s time to shine right here on the blog. Just in time for the holidays.

I totally recommend making a boozy batch for the adults with hazelnut liqueur and one that is kid friendly (just leave out the booze.) It’s ultra rich and creamy flavors will warm you right up. This homemade nutella hot cocoa really is for the chocolate lovers.

My grandmother started me early on Nutella. She would sneak me a spoonful when my mom wasn’t looking. It’s a bad habit that exists to this day, I just can’t keep it in the house! I even wanted to write a cookbook dedicated to Nutella itself, but I was buying the Costco sized two packs of it and more of it went onto a spoon than into the recipes.

But sometimes, the sin is worth it and this homemade nutella hot cocoa is. So. Worth. It!

What kind of chocolate?

Mix and match the kind of chopped chocolate you want to use to get the right amount of sweet or bitterness from a darker cocoa. You can use a darker 80% for the chopped chocolate if you like it less sweet. The kids might want something like a milk or semi-sweet chocolate. But the Nutella is a must.

What kind of milk?

And feel free to use whatever milk you prefer. Because this is meant to be a super sinful recipe, I went for it with using half and half in part of this recipe. You can use whatever makes your skirt fly up. If you’re dairy intolerant, this probably isn’t a good recipe for you, since Nutella does have dairy in it. You can use non-dairy milks for the base, and a vegan chocolate if you like to cut down on the dairy, but it’s hard to eliminate it completely.

And don’t forget the whipped cream on top, adding some Christmas sprinkles or extra chocolate shavings if you have them. You’re welcome. 😉

Description

Make this ultra creamy Homemade Nutella Hot Cocoa boozy for the adults, or kid-friendly! With two kinds of chocolate!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups (400 ml) Milk
  • 1 cup (250 ml) Half and Half
  • 4 ounces (125 grams) Milk or Semi Sweet Chocolate, chopped
  • 1/4 cup (75 ml) Chocolate Hazelnut Spread, such as Nutella
  • 1/4 cup (75 ml) Hazelnut Liqueur, optional (leave out for kid-friendly version)
  • Whipped Cream

Instructions

  1. In your saucepan or pot, pour in the milk and half and half. Stir these together and bring to a very slight simmer over medium low heat. Don’t heat the mixture too fast, to avoid scorching.
  2. Gently stir in the chopped chocolate, allowing it to melt. Next, add in the chocolate hazelnut spread and stir that in until it is dissolved.
  3. If you’re adding in any liquor, wait until the very end as you remove the hot cocoa from the stove. Divide the hot cocoa between mugs and top with whipped cream. If you have any chopped chocolate leftover, sprinkle some on top of the whipped cream for garnish.
  4. Sip immediately.
