I used to be adamant that I wouldn’t listen to Christmas music before December 1st. And I’m at an age when I can say “Back when I was young…” followed by some eye roll inducing story that makes me sound like a crusty old hide… But seriously, back when I was young (which WASN’T SO LONG AGO!), radio stations wouldn’t play Christmas music until December 1st!

Then it was Black Friday.

Now it’s before Thanksgiving.

And life with Pandora, Amazon, and Spotify isn’t helping matters any. Mostly I’m just mad at myself for what happens next…

Gingerbread Crinkle Cookies

One of my best friends is very pro-Christmas practically all year. And as it turns out, so is my husband. Well, he says it’s from Halloween until Valentine’s Day that Christmas music is allowed. This flies in the face of everything I knew about him. Though I did know that he doesn’t like Christmas music “with all those silly words in them.” He’s more of a Trans Siberian Orchestra kinda guy.

Me? Give me Michael Buble and my middle school day dream boy bands N’Sync and 98 Degrees albums ALL. Day. LONG.

Anyway… Whilst I was thumbing through Facebook, wasting time before we ran errands, Ben took a shower and I could hear it. Christmas music coming from the bathroom. We have a bluetooth speaker in there so we can listen to our podcasts as we get ready for the day… or in Ben’s case, turn on the Christmas music.

Really it couldn’t have come at a better more cosmically inclined time to happen upon this. I mean, puppies. C’mon.

Like any good wife I sent it to him right away. On his wall no less, to shame him. And more people than I care to count, including my dearest friends came out of the woodwork to come to his defense and count themselves among him- they were these people, too! Christmas music before Thanksgiving? It’s like I didn’t even know them!

So as mad as I tried to be at it… as righteous as I tried to stand… the wheels came off the wagon when Frank Sinatra’s Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas came on. Resist with all my might, I couldn’t anymore.

I started singing along. *screeches to a halt*

And that friends, is how I fell trap to the Christmas music before Thanksgiving.

  • Gingerbread Boxed Cake/Cookie Mix
  • Butter
  • Egg
  • Powdered Sugar

I whipped up these Gingerbread Crinkle cookies and as Seattle got our first unseasonably early snow, it felt like the right time to bust out some hot cocoa. Units Scale
  • 1 package (8oz) Cream Cheese, room temperature
  • 1 package (18 oz) Gingerbread Boxed Cake/Cookie Mix
  • 1/2 cup Butter, room temperature
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/2 cup Powdered Sugar


  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Beat in the egg.
  3. Lastly, mix in the cake mix until thoroughly incorporated.
  4. Cover bowl and refrigerate for 2 hours.
  5. Roll the chilled batter into 1″ sized balls and then roll them in powdered sugar. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet, 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake 12 minutes. The cookies will remain soft and gooey.
  7. Cool completely and sprinkle with more confectioners’ sugar, if desired.
