Here’s the thing, me and the Whole30 diet didn’t always see eye to eye. I had my slip ups (wine), and days where I couldn’t say “no” to a piece of cheese. It’s cheese for crying out loud!! BUT, for the 20 days I was on the wagon, I felt GREAT. Never one to believe the hype about elimination diets, I’m really glad I bit that bullet, and gave it a college try.
But the thing is, it shouldn’t have shocked me so bad that it worked, because I’ve had to go through elimination diets with Huck!! Yes, even my dog has had to deal with these before!

Being the squishy adorable, bumbly, love he is – he’s still a medical disaster. At one he was diagnosed with hip displaysia and a torn ACL. At three he was diagnosed with a laundry list of allergies so long it practically had to be rolled out along the floor to cover them all! It’s heartbreaking to watch everything your dog touches, eats or exists in make him itch, hurt, and cry. No joke! So we had to make some changes. We went grain free.
Now that’s not to say I’m hardcore grain free right now, there are things I have been able to roll back up into my diet that haven’t had negative effects, but after my roll with Whole30, I am comfortable cutting out a significant portion of those things that I realized caused me issues. Thanks be to the higher powers that cheese isn’t one of them!
But for Huck, we tried and tried with new foods, pills, and everything and now with the right combination of meds and food, he’s happy, healthy, and itch free! When he would fall over because he was itching so hard, let me tell you – heart torn out.

I have a 6-month old corgi puppy named Winston!!! I think you know quite a bit about him and what’s he’s been through..currently nursing a broken leg! He’s so spunky and fun. We love him to death 🙂
Omg, Winston would LOVE the grain free turkey, pea, and berry recipe jerky dog treat bites!!
Winston would be so stylish in the buffalo plaid dog collar!! Gah, such cute things on this site!!
when we got our puppy from the local spca, he was riddled with parasites and was having trouble getting his back legs to work. a lot of love (and a little medicine) got him back on his feet–literally–and now he’s the biggest handful you can imagine! my future mother-in-law asked me if we would go back and do it again if we had the choice, and i didn’t hesitate –YES! marleau is part of the family now. 🙂
liked you on facebook!
meanwhile, this recipe is amazing and i’d probably eat both potatoes myself. 🙂
Yum! My dog’s name is Marley and he is a Clumber Spaniel. He kind of looks like a cow, which we tease him about all the time! He loves to sit in front of the door all day watching people (or chasing our cats). He’s either super energetic or lazy – bounces between the two!
I have a 9-year old boxer mix, his name is Tyson! Even though he is a little old, he’s got the sweetest, biggest puppy eyes. These puppy eyes get me every time. He loves lounging on the couch, but also enjoys sprinting with me outside. He loves peanut butter, but we’ve been trying to keep him in shape as he gets older with healthy treats. These treats look delicious!
My Rowan is an almost six year old Labrador retriever. We adopted him from a shelter when he was two. He is my sunshine and I don’t know what I would do without him!
Rowan would love the fruit + veggie sweet potato sticks from Abound!
I really like the natural rope collar from Found My Animal!
We have a whiney Basset Hound named Finley who loves only loves treats more than running around outside chasing evil squirrels and rabbits away from our chickens LOL
I would like to try the TURKEY, PEA & BERRY RECIPE JERKY BITES
I like the Indigo dog harness from Found My Animal
I’m already a fan on Facebook
Ok, I don’t have a dog but I am in love with the flavors in these baked sweet potatoes!
Megan, I like your use of walnuts in this recipe. It bumps up the protein, vitamins and fiber. Nicely done!
Aw, love this post! Ginger tore her ACL before her 1st bday as well…heartbreaking! We feed her grain-free now too, not for any medical necessity, I just think it’s better quality stuff than most of those mainstream dog foods. I even went through a “making her own raw food” phase for a bit but that got old quick.
Ghee is such a magical, magical ingredient isn’t it?! Love this post and so in love with this giveaway! Cilantro doesn’t have any special stories. He is super special though and not the sharpest tool in the shed. He’s a 4 year old American Eskimo and he thinks he’s about 50 pounds lighter than he actually is! He makes our lives worth living. <3
20 days on whole 30 seems like a huge accomplishment to me! good for you! And I love these sweet potatoes, great side dish!
Good for you trying out the whole 30. I would I would have a similar process you had. Yummy looking sweet potato.
No wine?! Deal breaker. 😉 But, good for you for stickin’ with it!! That’s awesome.
I don’t have pets, but Huck is so, so gorgeous!!
Ha! Great minds think alike! I did stuffed sweet potatoes today too…but mine were not half as diet friendly. I love the ginger addition!!
My two little guys are grain-free as well and I’m always on the lookout for new flavors for them so I’m glad to discover a new option!
I’m so hesitant to try any of these elimination diets….too scared my favorites will be on the list! These potatoes look awesome, and totally good for you too! The best of both worlds!
Those puppy jerky bites look so good that I’d be tempted to snack on them! 🙂 Then again, maybe I’ll just take a double dose of those gorgeous sweet potatoes.
I have a crazy chihuahua that barks at everything! She was just diagnosed with arthritis and has a pinched nerve, so she’s getting very spoiled.
My dogs would love the GRAIN FREE DUCK & POTATO RECIPE JERKY BITES DOG TREATS
