For a girl that got her degree in political science, I really hate politics. And I feel terrible for luring you in with pie and then hitting you with information on Net Neutrality. But because this is such a HUGELY, important issue it needs to be addressed. By everyone.

But man, does it sound boring! I know. Snore. What does it mean for you, dear reader and internet user? It means that the corporations that provide your internet service would have the ability to regulate the speed in which you can get your internet service!

Uhhh, WUT?! And it gets worse…
When implemented, the FCC would allow these companies – like Comcast, Verizon, and Time Warner – to have a multi-tiered system in which they will transmit you data to you. And who would regulate what gets to you at what speeds? Those companies would!

Effectively, services and sites they see as money makers would get faster speeds – for more money. I love my Netflix just as much as the next Sherlock-0-phile who has been binge watching the third season all week! But if it goes into effect, the speeds in which that data is transmitted would be slowed down, unless Netflix pays more to have their speeds upgraded. And who would Netflix pass on those charges to? YOU!

This isn’t just worry about streaming services, but all services that use the internet and how companies can pick and choose what information you see based on what would make them the most money. Convenient? For them…

So what will you do when food photos don’t load? When you are prevented from accessing my site, or any other site, say news in a timely manner to get your information? Will you stick around to see when it will load? Probably not! This isn’t about streaming movies on your computer, it’s about accessing a fair and open internet that everyone can use freely and openly for whatever purpose they deem fit.

For more information – and a much less boring breakdown on what Net Neutrality is and how we can help shape the outcome, check out John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight monologue on it. If you’re a Daily Show fan, you know this adorkable Brit, and if you don’t know Jon Oliver – well, now you do! It’s not safe to listen to at work, with a few swear words, but he breaks it down so wonderfully and with humor. Give it a listen and then take action. I am off to comment now!
