One thing I always keep in my freezer is puff pastry. It’s universal in its applications around the kitchen. Need an appetizer for a party in a hurry? Check! This brie en croute is a favorite of mine. Need a dessert in a flash? Gotcha covered with these easy orange palmiers

Frozen Puff Pastry Is A Baker’s Best Friend

It’s a fake-it-til-you-make-it baker’s dream ingredient. And I will raise my hand high, that I will take any short cut available to me in the kitchen, particularly when it comes to making pie crusts or pastries. I was told by my sophomore lit teacher, to always stick to your “right”. Know what you’re good at, and know what you’re bad at “your left”. He railed against Sandra Bullocks’ first foray into dramatic acting in some completely forgettable crime drama movie that I don’t even remember, other than it also starred Ryan Gosling and that they dated for while afterwards. But his point was, she was a comedian, she was terrible at this drama thing. Nevermind a decade later she did finally win an Oscar for The Blind Side, but his point was, if you’re good at something, go with it.

I am not good at pastries. I have wrestled with it, and finally come to terms with the fact that my sanity (or what is left of it) is best spent on not having a meltdown over disastrous crusts and pastries – I have embraced the box in all it’s glory and will happily spend that $3.99 on a frozen puff pastry than folding tears into butter laden crusts that I can’t master.

Ingredients for Apple Pie Danishes

The ingredients for these easy Apple Pie Danishes are quick to find at your local grocery store. Puff Pastry sheets can be made by hand, or found in the freezer section at your grocer. Apple Pie filling can be found, typically, on the baking aisle.

  • Puff Pastry dough
  • Cream Cheese
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Sugar
  • Apple Pie Filling
  • 1 Egg
  • Powdered Sugar

Tears don’t taste nearly as good as my sanity feels.

And as fall is here (Praise!) I am busting out every flannel, vest, and pair of boots I own, because THIS IS MY SEASON! Apples, pumpkin, breads, this is what I have waited all year for!

Danishes using that frozen stock of puff pastry I have tucked away are my jam, and there is no shame in rolling out a sheet of pastry, slathering it in cream cheese, topping it with fruit and baking it to get your carb fix. Carbs are my drug. I feel like a Kesha song, if she was rapping about carbs.

You have probably seen all of the various ways I have made these danishes over the years, and let me add one more to the mix! These won’t stay on your counter for long! I highly recommend adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the top of one. You’re welcome.

Description

It’s time to usher in the cozy flavors of cinnamons and apple with these easy apple pie danishes! Using only a handful of easy to find ingredients, these apple pie danishes  are the perfect breakfast, snack, or dessert!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 sheet Puff Pastry dough, thawed
  • 8 ounces Cream Cheese, softened
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 4 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1 1/2 cup canned Apple Pie Filling, buy one standard can
  • 1 Egg + 2 Tablespoons water, whisked for egg wash
  • Powdered Sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking sheet.
  2. On a lightly floured surface roll out thawed puff pastry into a 12×9″ rectangle. Cut in half lengthwise, yielding 2 4-½” strips. Cut those two strips crosswise into thirds, to yield six 4×4 ½” pieces.
  3. With a knife, score ½” border around the edge of each piece of puff pastry. Use a fork to make five or six pricks into the dough within the border of each piece. This will help keep the middle of each piece from rising.
  4. In a bowl, stir together softened cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla. Spoon about 2-3 tablespoons of mixture into the middle of each piece of dough and spread around evenly, ensuring the mix stays within the borders.
  5. In the middle of the cream cheese, add 3-4 slices of apple from the apple pie filling into the middle.
  6. In a small dish, whisk together the egg and water, and brush it around the edges of the danishes.
  7. Bake for 20 minutes, on the middle rack and rotate the baking sheet half way through baking.
  8. Remove from baking sheet and cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or room temperature. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.
