Do you want to know how to know if your marriage can stand the test of time? Ben and I were put through the ultimate marriage test this last week and I’m happy to say we came out together on the other side. It’s moving. If you can get through a move without yelling (too much), crying (a lot), not talking (some), and still want to kiss each other goodnight by the end of it – you’re home free. Pear Cranberry Caramel Crisp helps, too.

Now that the kitchen is unpacked and back in order, everything is right in the world.

The worst part about moving was that we had to do it during the week. It’s not ideal on weekends when you just want to relax, let alone on a Monday afternoon! But the allure of a second bedroom and a south facing deck was just too much for me not to move. And thankfully Ben was on board.

At first we considered hiring movers – but at $600+ for a couple of guy? We threw our heads back, laughed, and said “Ahhh, helll nah”.

So the friends came to the rescue. Thank goodness. But now that we’ve had to trudge through a move, a test in our marriage, and now the unpacking – I might actually consider the movers next time. Everyone should move with their spouse once in their life… but I might just say “once”.

Then hire movers every time after that. And make this pear crisp recipe quick right after.

Fall time calls for cozy, warm desserts like this pear cranberry caramel crisp with a dollop of ice cream on top. Naturally!

Pear Cranberry Filling:

  • 5 Bartlett Pears, halved, cored and sliced in 1/3″ slices
  • 1 cup Dried Cranberries
  • 1/4 cup Caramel Sauce
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla
  • 2 Tbsp Cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp Nutmeg

Crumble Crisp Topping:

  • 1 1/4 cup Oats
  • 3/4 cup Flour
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Butter, softened
  • 1 Tbsp Cinnamon

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, add the pears and cranberries. Sprinkle the remaining ingredients over the pears and cranberries and toss to coat and combine all ingredients. Pour the mixture into a oven safe baking dish.
  2. For the crumble crisp filling, fit a stand mixer with a paddle attachment.(This can also be done by hand in the mixing bowl you used for the pear cranberry filling – and a little elbow grease.)
  3. Add all ingredients to the bowl, and with the mixer on low, beat the ingredients together until large crumbles form. Remove from the stand and sprinkle the crumbles over the pear-cranberry mix in the baking dish.
  4. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 30-45 minutes, depending on the depth of the dish. If during baking the crumble is getting too brown, lightly tent with a piece of foil and continue baking until the fruit is tender and cooked through.
  5. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly prior to serving. Top with ice cream and additional caramel sauce for an a  la mode dessert!
