When we moved into the house my mom did all of the unpacking of the kitchen. She organized, unloaded, staged, and uncovered the deep dark secrets of our apartment living life when she found out that we had 5 previously unknown cans of pumpkin, 4 jars of pasta sauce, 6 packets of oven sauces for easy week night dinners, and 3 cans of canned pie filling. *hands over eyes*
Living in the apartment meant every square inch was taken up, and often we would throw things from the store in wherever they would fit, usually not taking into account our inventory of food stuff before I went to the store and bought one more jar of pasta sauce “just in case”. Eye roll.
Our freezer was much the same with frozen pie crust and puff pastry, too. Whoops.

So these easy copycat McDonald’s Apple Pies are as much necessity of whittling down our stores of extra food as they are necessity to consume as many sweet treats as I can get my hands on.
Embarrassingly enough I’ve eaten more fast food this pregnancy than I had in the previous three years combined. Meaning if I can make something at home, slightly better for me than the lackluster, deep fried version of my favorite apple hand pies, than I will take it! And I can tell you – these are MUCH better than their itty bitty $1 fried counterpart.
These are amazing served as is, or make them ala mode with some vanilla ice cream. The iconic three slits on top totally give these the McDonald’s hand pie vibe, tart apples and all.
Ingredients for Easy Copycat McDonald’s Apple Pies
This recipe is the prime reason that you should always have a package of puff pastry dough ready to go in your freezer. Put it into the fridge the night before you want to bake these, or thaw them on the counter for about 45 minutes so they are pliable before making.
If you want to make these from scratch you can prepare your own apple pie filling, precooking the granny smith apples or other baking apples in a skillet to ensure that they are cooked down and spiced for the apple filling in these copycat hand pies. Unlike a traditional apple pie that you may not pre-cook the filling, these hand pies bake so quickly, the apples will not have enough time to cook completely inside and will be crunchy.
This is why I used the canned pie filling, it’s quick and easy and super easy to find in the grocery store.

FAQ’s
How do I store the leftovers?
These are easy to keep at room temperature in an airtight container. You do not want to refrigerate these, since the condensation in the refrigerator will make them soggy and the sugar on top will melt.

Easy Copycat McDonald’s Apple Pies
- Prep Time: 10 Minutes
- Cook Time: 15 Minutes
- Total Time: 25 minutes
- Yield: 8 1x
- Category: Dessert
- Method: Oven
- Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- 2 sheets Puff Pastry, thawed
- 1 can Apple Pie Filling
- 1 Egg White, whisked with 1 Tbsp Cold Water
- 2 Tbsp Sugar
- 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a small dish, mix together the sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
Roll out puff pastry into a 12″x12″ square. Using a ruler, cut the puff pastry into four 3″ wide strips. Then cut each strip in half to create a 3″x6″ rectangle.
Divide the apple pie filling among one half of the rectangles. Using a knife cut four diagonal cuts into the remaining puff pastry rectangles. Top the apple filled puff pastry with the cut puff pastry and press the seams together. Use the tines of a fork to secure the seams. Brush the tops of the puff pastry apple pies with the egg wash, and sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Bake for 13-15 minutes, or until the pies are deep golden brown. Set aside on a wire rack to cool slightly before eating.

I had to come over and see how you did these and I kinda love how simple it is! I happen to have 1 can of apple pie filling on hand too (in the depths of my pantry) that I’ve been needing to use up for like um, years now. lol (embarrassing)

This is so fun! What a great idea. Also I love how authentic you seem to be. Your style and passion for blogging is contagious. Thank you for sharing your life!
I think the only problem with this is that McDonald’s hasn’t fried their pies for over 25 years, 1992, I think? Since then they’ve been baked, not fried.
Uhh they are baked…..😐
Yes they are! Not everyone (including me) has a fryer, so I wanted to make a simple alternative. 🙂
Do you have a recipe for blueberry hand pies that use canned blueberry pie filling and refrigerated pie crust?
I do not! But I should!! You should be able to use this basic recipe and make the substitutions. The pie crust might handle differently than puff pastry, but they should still be tasty! More time might be needed to bake the pie crust version.
