Make sure it is ripe, but overripe fruit doesn't have the same amount of pectin and will not hold when canned.  – Don't use fresh lemons - while I just said using fresh fruit is a good idea, it is recommended for canning to maintain proper acidity levels in canning, that using bottled lemon helps ensure proper canning acidity since freshs lemons can vary more than bottled.
